The Sites

The town of Cumberland has a rich American history to it. It was used as an outpost by George Washington during the French and Indian War, and his first military headquarters was built there. The National Road also began construction there, which was the first major highway in the United States. Today, you can drive the Historic National Road scenic byway and check out the museums along the way. There’s also the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, a heritage railroad that operates from Cumberland to Frostburg and back using diesel locomotives.

There are two legendary hiking/biking trails in Cumberland, the Great Allegheny Passage, and C&O Canal Towpath. The Great Allegheny Passage is 150 miles long and goes from Cumberland all the way to Pittsburgh, PA. It runs alongside three rivers, around mountains, and soars over valleys. The C&O Towpath is even bigger. A whopping 185 miles, the path goes from Cumberland to Washington D.C. (Georgetown). Some people have even journeyed both paths together, traveling from D.C. to Pittsburgh.
