At SpecialtyCare, we always say that we work with the best people. In fact, we believe that our team is filled with the most talented allied health professionals in the industry. We can say it, but it’s far better when our team members talk about their experiences: how they’re excelling while building specialized, exciting careers alongside peers and mentors that encourage and inspire them.
We recently spoke with Audrey Somchith, CNIM, about what her professional development in the field of neurophysiology has been like in the SpecialtyCare environment. Our mission is to make surgery safer, and that includes creating an atmosphere for our clinicians and technicians to thrive in their work.
Looking for Something New, Personally and Professionally
Audrey Somchith, CNIM, is our team lead at UC Davis in Sacramento, CA. But her journey in the field of IONM began in 2023, when she graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience.
“I wasn’t compelled to go into research or academia, but I knew I wanted to continue my career in healthcare,” Audrey said. “Since my primary focus in my studies was neuroscience and I had prior hospital experience being a pharmacy tech, it was the perfect meld of my passions. I found out about IONM through researching neuroscience clinical positions.
“To be honest, I wanted to leave the Midwest and experience something new. Sacramento was much different than my hometown of Chicago and did take some time to get used to. I miss the snow, but not having to shovel on winter mornings is nice! Now, Sacramento is home, and I am so grateful to have met my community and best friends in this city.”
Training, Connections, and Integrating with Surgical Teams
Audrey started our IONM training program, hungry for education and experience — but she quickly found that much more was in store for her through relationships with other colleagues in the field. “The many amazing mentors on my team have helped me become the clinician I am today, and I have built great relationships with the surgeons we work with,” Audrey said.
In lieu of this, she felt inspired by the spirit of the team and was willing to champion the interests of her peers. That initiative took her even further along in her career. “Through advocating for my fellow team members and the management of our case scheduling, I became the UC Davis team lead last August!”
Audrey recognizes the value of the connections she has, and it empowers her work. “My teammates are both excellent clinicians and wonderful humans. We pick each other up and support each other through hard and stressful days,” she says. “I adore each and every one of them, and I am so happy to have them as my team. Although we might not see each other every day or very often, our team is close knit, and we love to get together for team dinners.”
