Celebrating 31 Years of Excellence: James Buck’s Inspiring Journey in Perfusion

At SpecialtyCare, we’re proud to celebrate James Buck, BS, CCP, LP, Regional Director of Operations – Perfusion, South Central Region, for an incredible 31 years of service. His journey from the Air Force to the operating room is a testament to the rewarding, lifelong career opportunities in perfusion.

From Fighter Jets to the OR

James’s career path took an unexpected turn in Gulfport, Mississippi. After serving in the Air Force reserves and training as a medical technician, he came across a newspaper ad seeking an EMT, LPN, or Respiratory Therapist for an open-heart team.

“I didn’t know anything about open-heart surgery,” James laughs. “My wife and I went round and round about whether I should apply. She was pregnant, I needed a job, so I finally did—and beat out 15 other applicants.”

His recordkeeping experience as an F-16 crew chief gave him an edge, and two years later, he decided he wanted to “switch seats” and become a perfusionist. “Perfusion is sort of like being a crew chief—it’s about trust. The bond you form with your surgeons is like the one between pilots and their ground crew.”

Rapid Growth and Changing Technology

James’s early years were fast-paced. Working at what was then SpecialtyCare’s largest account, he performed nearly 200 cases annually. “We just worked until the work was done,” he says.

Over the decades, he’s seen the field transform. “Heart-lung machines now have incredible safety features,” James notes. “Even open-heart packs have evolved to use less volume and conserve blood. The technology has made perfusion safer and more efficient than ever.”

Leadership and Mentorship

Just three years after completing perfusion school, James was promoted into management—a turning point that shaped the rest of his career. “I didn’t think I was ready to lead a large account,” he says. “But my supervisor saw something in me that I didn’t.”

Now, as Regional Director, he oversees 13 direct reports and continues to lead with trust and collaboration. “What I enjoy most is the teamwork we’ve built. Without my team, my job would be much more difficult. They make it all possible.”

Staying Passionate After 31 Years

When asked what keeps him motivated after three decades, James jokes, “Getting a paycheck!” before adding, “I just really enjoy what I do. There have been ups and downs, but the positives have always outweighed the negatives. I’ve had great leaders and a supportive wife who’ve helped me stay focused on what matters.”

Looking back, he’s most proud of the patients he’s helped and the people he’s mentored. “I hope I’ve been a good example to the managers who’ve reported to me,” he says.

Advice for Future Perfusionists

James’s advice for those entering the field is simple: “Work at a busy hospital that does all kinds of procedures, and don’t be afraid to put in the work. It’ll make you a better perfusionist. And when you’re interviewing, watch how the team interacts—good leadership makes all the difference.”

Life Outside the OR

When he’s not supporting teams or hospitals, James enjoys riding his motorcycle, traveling with his wife, and spending time with his grandchildren. “I love watching them do what they love, whether it’s sports or dance,” he says.

A Lasting Legacy

For 31 years, James Buck has embodied the values that make SpecialtyCare exceptional—dedication, teamwork, and excellence in patient care. Congratulations, James, and thank you for your leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to the perfusion profession.
