CIM Week 2022 Highlight: Day in the Life, MIS Clinical Specialist Edition

We celebrate our first annual CIM Week this week, October 10-14, 2022. CIM stands for Comprehensive Instrumentation Management and is a merging of our legacy MIS and SPD lines, as well as additional service offerings that are currently in development. Our highly-trained minimally invasive specialists work closely with sterile processing departments and operating rooms to make surgery safer for everyone, and we are excited to have the opportunity to highlight three of our MIS Clinical Specialists to honor the MIS contribution to CIM as a whole.

Johnathan Mason: MidSouth-Arkansas MISS Team, Clinical-MI I

What is your role with SpecialtyCare and how long have you been with us?

I am a MIS Clinical Specialist l and have been with the company for 2 months.

Why did you choose this role specifically?

I chose this role due to my background in dialysis where I served as a Clinical Technician servicing the analyzers and testing blood samples for the hematology department at my former job. I also loved the hustle of the Surgical Support team in my region seeing SpecialtyCare on every case in every place you can imagine.

Can you describe the path you took to get to where you are today?

I have always had a passion for science and the human body since I was a kid. When I finally got a chance to start my college career, I majored in Chemistry with a pre-medicine concentration so that there was no door I could not look through.

What does your day-to-day look like?

Day-to-day for me consists of coming to work on time and communicating with my clinical manager on the duties for the day. I then proceed to the OR board to see where surgical support services will be needed for the day. After that, I assist the hospital OR team to ensure care and readiness for each patient and procedure we are assigned. Then after each case, I head to decontamination where I complete the 15 steps of sterilization to ensure that all of our SpecialtyCare equipment is clean, functional, and sterilized correctly to company standards. Finally, we celebrate as a team at the end of each procedure and move on to the next case.

What is something you love about your team?

My team has the most grit and grind attitude of any team I have worked with. They help me develop my skills as a Clinical Specialist each day that we work together leaving no task undone and making sure no one is left behind. I appreciate each and everyone one of my surgical support teammates in the Mid-South region here in Memphis, TN.

What is something you love about your city?

I see Memphis, TN, as one of the medical capitals in the nation because of the accomplishments each medical institution has succeeded in each year. Whether it is Baptist Memphis or Methodist Le Bonheur, to have a leader as great as Kanta Brent and the team of clinical managers around her just makes the city and work feel like home. I love what I do as a clinical specialist and the city I am doing it for just makes me happy about my career and the home I found with SpecialtyCare.

What is one of the most rewarding parts of your job?

The most rewarding thing about my job is the relationships I get to build with the hospital staff at each site. Everyone is willing to teach and lend a hand when needed. I have received praise for my hard work and collaboration with staff, and that gives me the drive to do more and continue to use this company’s core values to amplify my career.

What is one thing that surprised you about your job?

The one thing that surprised me about this job is the advancements in each position throughout the company. There are so many jobs you can do within SpecialtyCare and so much to learn about the company itself. For example, I have never worked for a company that focuses on promoting internally at about 15% a year and that is amazing! SpecialtyCare gave me not only the tools but the vast amount of opportunities to be great and progress with my healthcare career, and I am beyond thankful.

If you could encourage anyone to join your team, what would you say?

If you are looking for a career in healthcare that focuses on your continuous training and your individual career path in healthcare while paying you to continue your education to achieve whatever occupation you set your mind to in the OR, then come and be the difference for SpecialtyCare!

If you could go back in time to when you first started your career, what would you say to yourself?

I would tell myself, “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love what you are doing or learning to do.”  -Pele

Charles Cleckley: MidSouth-Arkansas MISS Team, Clinical-MI III

What is your role with SpecialtyCare and how long have you been with us?

My role in Specialty Care is working with the MISS team. I’ve been with the company for 10 months now.

Why did you choose this role specifically?

I chose this role because it was presented to me first hand, and this was my ticket into learning something new.

Can you describe the path you took to get to where you are today?

My path to get where I am today has been a little challenging, but very fulfilling. I went to school and got my CBSPD certification. I am originally from California, and I couldn’t find any place that would hire me because I had such little experience. I moved to Tennessee and found a job as an SPD tech. Then, after about a year, I got in contact with SpecialtyCare.

What does your day-to-day look like?

My day-to-day can be pretty busy depending on the amount of work we have. This job is very enjoyable to me, and it is satisfying to fulfill my job everyday.

What is something you love about your team?

My team is very helpful and we all get along great! I wouldn’t want anyone else but the people I work with now. They are hard workers!

What is something you love about your city?

This city has many hospitals that I get the privilege of working at.

What is one of the most rewarding parts of your job?

The most rewarding part of the job is being able to assist the doctors in helping improve the well-being of someone and/or saving lives.

What is one thing that surprised you about your job?

One thing that surprised me about the job is how nice the doctors are! I really appreciate the ones who are down to earth.

If you could encourage anyone to join your team, what would you say?

I would tell them that this is the best job I’ve ever had and that you can learn and grow so much with this company that it would be a loss to pass up on.

If you could go back in time to when you first started your career, what would you say to yourself?

I would tell myself to be patient and keep on the course you have been given because it’s only going to get better from here. Don’t be discouraged.

Jean-Imani Phipps: MidSouth-Arkansas MISS Team, Clinical-MI I

What is your role with SpecialtyCare and how long have you been with us?

I’m a Minimally Invasive Surgical Specialist, and I’ve been with SpecialtyCare since November 2021.

Why did you choose this role specifically?

I’ve always been fascinated with healthcare and medicine, and this role was the perfect gateway into the community/lifestyle.

Can you describe the path you took to get to where you are today?

Before accepting this role, I worked in education. I enjoyed my job, as well as the children that I worked with, but I wasn’t being as fulfilled as I thought I should’ve been. So, at the end of the 2019-2020 school year, and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I decided not to renew my contract.

What does your day-to-day look like?

That’s the thing I enjoy most about this role. The day-to-day is never the same, and it always keeps us on our toes.

What is something you love about your team?

My team is just that, a team. We have each other’s backs because we know it helps us succeed.

What is something you love about your city?

The Memphis Metropolitan Area is just rich in culture, from the people, to the music, to the food. If you’re looking for something, Memphis has it.

What is one of the most rewarding parts of your job?

The most rewarding part of job is knowing that I’m providing a service that makes someone else’s job a little less stressful.

What is one thing that surprised you about your job?

While it shouldn’t have surprised me, the amount of walking I’ve done since starting is astronomical! I average five to six miles a day.

If you could encourage anyone to join your team, what would you say?

If you’re interested in healthcare, but not sure where exactly you would fit in, this an amazing starting point.

If you could go back in time to when you first started your career, what would you say to yourself?

Stop overthinking. You’re doing fine.
