While some of us are lucky enough to discover our passion and find our dream career right away, the majority of us work numerous jobs before we realize what we really want to do. The SpecialtyCare family is no exception. Our extraordinary employees come from all walks of life, and many of them had completely different careers before learning that the healthcare field was the right fit. Read on as we highlight the origin stories of some associates we sure are glad made the switch.
Sonia, Teacher to Clinical Director
Sonia Zuzek was always interested in healthcare, but for whatever reason, she didn’t flock to it immediately. She started off as a public school teacher for four years. But during those four years, a different plan kept calling to her. She became the lead science teacher in her grade at a school that heavily emphasized science. She wanted to help people but was leaning more toward something medical-related, so she decided to start a career as a physician assistant and went back to school to take her pre-requisites. Then she powered through to achieve a biology degree in 18 months. Everyone thought she was nuts for reinventing herself. She connected with SpecialtyCare while she was still in school, and we hired her to go straight into the OR. She later went from surgical PA to Clinical Manager to Director of Clinical Education. Sam, Piano Player to IONM Director of Operations
Sam Johnson had no intention of getting into allied healthcare. An avid piano player from New Orleans, he had ambitions of being a jazz musician and got his degree in music education. But during his senior year, he took physics and got exposed to audiology, a pioneering profession that helped set the foundations of IONM. He knew by this point that he wanted to be a healthcare professional and attended Harvard’s audiology program. Using his experience as a foothold, he started work at Penn State Medical Center where he met Jeff Lohmann, a senior clinician with SpecialtyCare. Jeff allowed Sam to cut his teeth into neuromonitoring, and Sam later patterned his own career after seeing how Jeff formed relationships with surgeons and hospital staff. He later went from neurophysiologist to Director of IONM Operations at SpecialtyCare. For more on Sam, watch his podcast ep here.
Martha, Personal Assistant to Neurophysiologist
Before a fulfilling career in IONM, Martha Ross started off as a personal assistant to a neurologist. She came from a small town in Georgia and flocked to a bigger city nearby (Nashville) for work and quickly found herself running someone else’s life. She managed her boss’s home, kids, laundry, groceries, all of it. Then, over time, she formed a bond with the neurologist, who invited her to shadow her at the hospital. It was there that Martha met the neurodiagnostics team. It was perfect timing. As it turned out, that very hospital was starting a brand new neurodiagnostics school. After graduating at the top of her class, she connected with some SpecialtyCare clinicians at conferences. She is now a certified neurophysiologist.
