In the second part of our series, we continue taking a look at the beginning of the journey for some of our SpecialtyCare employees and how they came to be in their current roles today.
Erin, Military to Perfusion
Years ago, Erin Friesenborg was bravely serving our country as an Army Combat Medic. She had aspirations of joining the Army Physician Assistant Program and applied seven years in a row. After missing the required GPA score in the last year by a tenth of a point, she asked her mom for advice. Her mother said that her friends in healthcare suggested perfusion school. After reaching out to a perfusionist and observing some cases in person and up close, she applied to a few Master’s programs and got into Quinnipiac University on the first try. She is now a perfusionist with SpecialtyCare in Minnesota and remains a Major and Medical Operations Planner in the Army Reserve. To hear more about her story, check out Life in the OR.
Chris, Surgeon Aspirations to Regional Manager
Chris Wedekind always knew he wanted to work in healthcare, recognizing early on that working to help people was a special privilege. By the time he got into college, he has aspirations of becoming a surgeon. He applied to med school and was wait-listed. After that, he applied and got accepted into both optometry school and dental school. It was around this time that he had heard about perfusion and had no idea what it was. He visited the closest perfusion program to him at Stanford and got very excited after learning more about this hidden gem of healthcare professions. After 20 years as a perfusionist, he decided to start his own perfusion business. Cris then joined SpecialtyCare in 2016 as Regional Director of Perfusion for our northern California area. Art, Multiple Careers to Operations Director
As so many others do, Art Silva got into the allied healthcare game later in life. After going through a few careers, he realized his calling was to help others and wanted to make a living doing it as well. He went back to school without knowing what he was going to become and started taking science courses. Then, he discovered the physician assistant program through other students he studied with, and it was there that he fell in love with the OR. A self-proclaimed “surgery rat,” he couldn’t get enough and didn’t care what time he had to come in. It was play to him – not work. He specialized in rehab and physical medicine, then the more prestigious orthopedics specialty. He is currently SpecialtyCare’s Director of Operations for Surgical Assist.
