Low Cost of Living

Everyone knows property value in many parts of Florida is expensive and popular, so it’s nice to have an affordable city there. Located in central Florida, Ocala is cheaper than other hotspots in the rest of the state. According to Bestplaces.net, the median cost of purchasing a home there is $142,500, well below the U.S. median of $219,700, and far below the state median of $225,200. When compared to a more populated city in Florida like Orlando ($228,600), it really puts the cost into perspective. The average rent of a 1 bedroom apartment in Ocala is $704 a month, again falling below the national average of $930 a month and the state average of $945 a month. It also received an A+ in amenities on a report card by Areavibes.com.

A Beach in Either Direction

Ocala is located smack dab in the middle of the state, and while the beach isn’t far in either direction, a decision will have to be made every time you want to hit the white sand. The closest town that has beaches west of Ocala (in the Gulf) is Crystal River, which is less than an hour away. There you’ll find Hunter Springs Park and Fort Island Beach. The first is a city park with tree-covered land leading up to the coast, and Fort Island is a public beach with a boat ramp and popular fishing pier. Then the closest beach to the east is more well-known Daytona Beach (on the Atlantic coast), about 90 minutes away. Daytona is a bit busier with plenty of beach access, outdoor music concerts and a boardwalk with rides and arcades. You’d also be close to the Daytona 500 race every year, that is if you happen to be a Nascar fan.

Day Trips to Orlando

Even closer than Daytona is Orlando, which is an hour and 15 minutes away. This means you’ll have access to theme parks galore with Disney World, Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, SeaWorld, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and the soon-to-be-open Star Wars-themed Galaxy’s Edge later this year. And for you NBA fans out there, this also means you can hit up the Orlando Magic games whenever you feel like it. Likewise, movie fans will have the 11th Annual Orlando Film Festival to look forward to every October.
