Meet New Challenges with ECMO

What is ECMO? Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a highly specialized form of life support that temporarily replaces the function of the heart and lungs when they can no longer provide adequate oxygenation or circulation. Often described as an advanced heart lung machine, ECMO supports critically ill patients during complex cardiac and respiratory emergencies.

Acting as an artificial set of heart and lungs, the ECMO procedure is used in complex and high-stakes situations where many other treatment options aren’t viable. Operating an ECMO machine requires extensive clinical expertise, rapid decision-making, and advanced ECMO training to safely respond to patient needs throughout treatment.

An ECMO machine provides life support to patients whose heart and lungs can’t provide enough gas exchange or perfusion. In many cases, ECMO temporarily replaces cardiac and pulmonary function, allowing the medical team to repair injury or stabilize patients while awaiting heart or lung transplant.

Understanding the ECMO meaning goes beyond technology alone — it is a coordinated clinical approach designed to support blood circulation and oxygen delivery throughout the body, allowing the lungs and heart to rest and heal.

When you partner with SpecialtyCare, you can be confident that your cardiac OR and critical care teams will always have capable clinicians ready to support any ECMO procedure. We understand what it takes to build an efficient, cost-effective operating room and critical care environment staffed with the right people, processes, and equipment.
