Highly capable surgeons deserve to have the best teams available to empower them. SpecialtyCare is just that. In operation since 2001, our team provides expertise in microelectrode recording and stimulation mapping, guiding the placement of approximately 1,800 DBS leads every year. Our neurophysiologists receive the most comprehensive training in the industry and gain hands-on experience at over 80 of the most respected DBS centers in the country.
Provide specialized capital equipment necessary for subcortical brain mapping, including microelectrode recording and microdrive systems, or work with in-house systems from all vendors.
Identify and classify neurons responsive to kinesthetic, tactile, or visual stimulation during microelectrode recording (MER).
Provide tailored mapping protocols for each physician and patient, including single or array microelectrode recording (with or without somatotopic mapping) and stimulation mapping to maximize treatment efficacy and minimize side effects.
Provide technical interpretation of MER and test stimulation results to the surgeon to identify the optimal location for DBS lead implantation.
Provide assistance with surgical planning.
Set up, operate, and troubleshoot neurophysiology systems from all vendors.
Consult on technical issues related to the DBS procedure.
Upon request, provide didactic support for OR staff, residents, and visitors regarding the theory and practice of DBS.
The success of DBS therapy depends upon accurate placement of the DBS lead, which allows maximal treatment benefit and battery life with minimal stimulation-induced side effects. Intraoperative microelectrode recording and stimulation-mapping allows the identification of deep brain structures that are not fully resolved in CT or MRI image sequences. Our neurophysiologists provide expert technical interpretation of this information to help guide the surgeon to the optimal location to implant the permanent DBS lead. One in every 6 DBS leads in the U.S. is guided into place by our team. Our extensive experience and specialized training in DBS mapping protocols ensure that patients have the best outcomes possible.
Our expertise and experience ensure that you and your patient will receive the most experienced staff available, resulting in improved patient outcomes and reduced OR time.
Are you curious as to how a SpecialtyCare Deep Brain Stimulation Service can potentially make your operating room more efficient, safer for the patient, and staffed with a team that is low in turnover and high in clinical training?
