What Is ECMO?

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) provides temporary support for patients with cardiac or pulmonary failure using a heart-lung machine. This ECMO machine replaces the function of the heart and lungs to allow the surgical team to repair the injury or wait for a transplant. The heart-lung machine provides oxygen to the body, allowing it to rest and heal during the procedure.

Historically, ECMO was used in neonates, infants, and children procedures. However, its use has become increasingly critical in treating adults and children with severe cardiac or pulmonary failure and managing COVID-19. ECMO is rapidly growing, but there are still some unanswered questions about best practices.

Leader in ECMO Services and Support

With ECMO’s growing demand, SpecialtyCare is committed to evolving our service line to support hospitals across the country with staffing, consulting, and structured educational programs for nurses and respiratory therapists. Our goal is to help hospitals set up an efficient, cost-effective infrastructure with highly-trained staff and top-of-the-line equipment that allows you to keep ECMO patients safely at your facility.

SpecialtyCare is the thought leader in perfusion and ECMO, and we continue to expand our experience and national reach. We hold the most extensive database with over 100 ECMO programs and 1,000 ECMO procedures every year. Additionally, we support our ECMO program with broad clinician expertise and published literature. Even with the overwhelming challenges brought on by COVID-19, we topped our highest number of cases per year last year, completing 1,100 cases.
