Can Perfusion Enhance Your OR

When it comes to innovation in the OR, SpecialtyCare works to stay on the leading edge by employing clinical experts and collecting extensive research on surgical procedures. We are on the front lines with our partners, focused on making surgery safer and helping to improve patient outcomes. We’re able to do this because of our team of highly trained clinicians, our expert staff members who ensure clinical performance and quality, and the SpecialtyCare Operative Procedural Registry (SCOPE)™, where we collect valuable information on surgeries being performed nationwide.

Expertise in Clinical Performance and Quality

It’s no secret that our talented perfusionists support hundreds of thousands of procedures in hospitals across the country every year. We focus on ensuring training and compliance, preparing our perfusionists to coordinate well with diverse surgical teams in the OR. But we also have experts on staff who uphold our commitment to clinical performance and quality, such as Alfred Stammers, MSA, CCP, and Linda Mongero, CCP.

Alfred Stammers, Vice President of Clinical Quality and Outcomes Research, focuses on advancing clinical quality through innovation and data analyses that identify industry trends. He helps us develop safer, more effective practices and techniques for cardiovascular surgery and patient care. With nearly three decades of experience as a national leader in cardiopulmonary bypass, he has over 300 publications on perfusion-related topics. He speaks regularly to international audiences and has served for the perfusion schools affiliated with University of Nebraska Medical Center, Medical University of South Carolina, and University of Michigan. He’s also been actively engaged with AmSECT since 1985, holding a variety of significant leadership positions.

Linda Mongero, Director of Education and Clinical Performance, has been instrumental in launching our ECMO training program. SpecialtyCare works with hospitals to help them set up their own ECMO programs, and Linda trains nurses on the ECMO machine in lieu of perfusion support. Linda is a member of the American Society of ExtraCorporeal Technology (AmSECT) Quality Assurance Committee and is an advisor to the New York State Board of Health. She has also served as President of the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) and the American Academy of Cardiovascular Perfusion. She has presented more than 200 abstracts and articles in clinical literature, and she is dedicated to advancing SpecialtyCare’s pursuit of clinical excellence.

Gleaning Data from Hundreds of Thousands of Procedures

SpecialtyCare’s research database, SCOPE, is the largest database of its kind — a reservoir of valuable information submitted by clinicians throughout the country on hundreds of thousands of procedures. This data is available to all of our clinicians and partner hospitals, providing them with information on best practices, innovative surgeries, and the results of different types of approaches. Armed with this research, our clinicians are able to provide superior services based on the collective knowledge and experience of thousands of their peers. This is simply one more way that SpecialtyCare is working to support advances in the healthcare industry and improve outcomes. The more we know, the more we are able to further the cause of safer surgery and raise standards of care.
