“The Day-to-Day Is Never the Same”: Jean-Imani Phipps, Clinical MI Specialist III, on the Value of Variety

Monotony can put a damper on any kind of job. The healthcare industry has its patterns and repetitions, but if there’s one thing it always has in abundance, it’s variety. We recently interviewed Jean-Imani Phipps, a Clinical MI Specialist III, to discover the virtues of the ever-changing landscape of life on her team.

“I’ve always been fascinated with healthcare and medicine, and this role was the perfect gateway into the community and lifestyle. Before accepting this role, I worked in education. I enjoyed my job, as well as the children that I worked with, but I wasn’t being as fulfilled as I thought I should’ve been,” says Jean-Imani. “So, at the end of the 2019-2020 school year, and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I decided not to renew my contract.” Though at one point she was submitting 25-30 job applications a day, Jean-Imani was unemployed for about 15 months during that trying time. That’s when SpecialtyCare called her for an interview.

Variety, Interactions, and Good Exercise

“The thing I enjoy most about this role [is that] the day-to-day is never the same, and it always keeps us on our toes,” says Jean-Imani. In addition to the variety, she appreciates the collaboration she experiences. “My team is just that, a team. We have each other’s backs because we know it helps us succeed.”

Jean-Imani has found that she’s also been literally kept on her toes. “While it shouldn’t have surprised me, the amount of walking I’ve done since starting is astronomical! I average five to six miles a day,” she says. She also finds the work fulfilling because of the ways she gets to help others. “Recently, an OR nurse complimented me on how efficient and helpful I was. She expressed that it made her job so much easier.”

She also says that, in life, Memphis is more exciting than people might think. “Contrary to popular belief, there is almost always something to do in the Memphis Metropolitan Area, from watching the Grizzlies dominate the court to taking a boat ride down the Mighty Mississippi,” Jean-Imani says.
